CaGBC 3rd Annual National Conference

Big on education, networking

The Canada Green Building Council [CaGBC] held its 3rd Annual Conference at the Vancouver Convention Centre June 8-10, supported by BC Hydro’s Powersmart. With the past two years being such successful events for the industry, this year was expected to be bigger and better than ever: a goal that was met with 1,300 attendees over the two days, making this still relatively young event the largest green building conference in Canada.

The event kicked off on Tuesday night with a busy and wonderful opening reception in the new LEED Platinum West Building of the Convention Centre.  On Wednesday the Conference program started with Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and Premier Gordon Campbell as keynote speakers at the morning breakfast. The full program consisted of eight streams varying from Green Practices for New Construction, to Policy and Procedures, to LEED Canada for Homes, to Sustainable Cities and Communities, to name a few.
A lively display of drumming opened the tradeshow floor on the Wednesday, with over 110 exhibiting booths, ranging from product manufacturers to academic institutions, giving attendees plenty of variety to complement the education sessions and site tours.
As with the opening reception, the CaGBC Achievement Awards Gala Dinner on Wednesday evening was held in the spectacular Convention Centre West building that offers terrific views of the waterfront and mountains. The CaGBC presented eight achievement Awards as well as the Andy Kesteloo award to recognize well deserving individuals in the field. Thursday sessions continued with more great experts on green building, most notably the keynote speaker Vivian Loftness of Carnegie Mellon University.
Now only three years old, the growing CaGBC Conference has become the most important education and networking conference on green building in Canada. Watch the CaGBC website and SABMag for information on the 2011 CaGBC Conference.
