81-27 House
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Nestled within a suburban neighbourhood in Toronto’s west end just north of the shores of Lake Ontario, 81-27 is a project which integrates a modern addition with an existing century home and its detached garage. Stemming from a need for increased living space, this new addition for a growing family is representative of an ever increasing amount of modestly budgeted single-family residential projects which focus on the quantitative returns of maximizing gross floor area and minimizing budget, disregarding the merits of a qualitative analysis which considers existing built form, engaging spatial relationships between interior and exterior, and integrated passive design strategies.
Deriving its form from the scale of the existing buildings, program requirements, site orientation and micro-climate, the strategic positioning of the addition creates a mini-campus of new and re-defined architectural elements, transforming the original site plan into a cohesive, site specific courtyard residence which engages its site both spatially and environmentally. Mindful of its modest budget, context, environment and the daily demands of a growing family, 81-27 represents a counter-intuitive, yet accessible approach to the single-minded residential architecture of suburbia.
