Cooling down the roof with reflective membranes
A green roof provides the highest environmental benefits, but where it isn’t practical, a reflective roof offers a sustainable option. SOPREMA’s SOPRASTAR HDGR SBS modified bitumen cap sheet with highly reflective and emissive ultra white slate flakes can significantly reduce the roof’s service temperature in summer months. This reduces cooling costs and the impact on the urban heat island effect.
The slate flakes protect the SBS modified bitumen from heat and UV rays, extending its service life. Roofing assembly components are also protected, providing the option of recovering, which can double or triple the roof’s life expectancy at minimal cost. A reflective roof can contribute to the Canadian Green Building Council’s LEED credit SS7.2 regarding heat island effect.Info: www.soprema.ca

Water Matrix picks up Flapperless toilet
Water Matrix, a distributor of water-conserving fixtures, now carries the Niagara Flapperless toilet that uses a tip-bucket design that avoids flexible seals used in conventional toilets. Such seals often wear out and are one of the most prevalent causes of household water waste. By holding flush water in a tip-bucket rather than in the tank, the flapperless toilet is leak-free. The Claremont one-piece toilet model uses only 4.8l per flush.Info: rickr@watermatrix.com

Black & Decker Power Monitor lets homeowners monitor energy consumption and costs
Power Monitor, the first product in the Black & Decker Energy Series Category, can help the average Canadian family measure its energy consumption and decrease electricity bills by as much as 20%, equivalent to about $220 a year in energy costs.
Power Monitor measures real-time energy consumption in dollars and cents so people can easily see where and when they are using energy. A sensor on the outside meter monitors electricity use, and transmits this information to the handheld display monitor that shows: 1) electricity use in real-time 2) month-to-date costs; 3) estimated bill at the end of the month; and even 4) incremental costs of individual electronics.
Other products in Black & Decker’s Energy Series include the Thermal Leak Detector and Lights Out™ AutoSwitch. Info: www.blackanddecker.com , Laura Noel García, 416-848-1441
